April General Meeting: Derek Benson – Zoological Amphibian Conservation

Amphibian Conservation Supervisor, Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

Zoological Amphibian Conservation Progression and Impact

April 3 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Derek has been actively involved in zoo amphibian conservation for over thirteen years. He currently oversees the amphibian conservation area at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, managing breeding populations of endangered species, a team of four full-time staff, and a seasonally fluctuating population of up to 3,000 anurans and caudates. Derek has dedicated his career to preventing amphibian extinctions, with expertise in ex situ reproduction, in situ field monitoring, and strengthening the bridge between zoo populations and wild ecosystems. More recently, he has focused assisting with zoo planning to incorporate conservation initiatives into guest experiences.

Beyond his work at the zoo, Derek plays key roles in national conservation efforts. He serves as the vice coordinator and studbook keeper for the Wyoming Toad SAFE program, regional coordinator for the Frosted Flatwoods Salamander Working Group, and regional amphibian biobanking representative, and is an instructor for the assisted reproductive technologies workshop. He’s completed specialized training such as IUCN’s facilitating species conservation planning, AZA’s population management, and regularly provides amphibian conservation consulting for partner facilities. Outside of the zoo world, he enjoys four-wheel drive vehicles, discus aquaria, and home remodeling projects.
